The Calabria region is known as the “toe of the boot” italian peninsula. It has a well preserved and untouched environment. Here the human settlement of the past reveals its ancient origin: the bronze statues “Bronzi di Riace”, now in the Museum of Reggio Calabria, are one of the witnesses.
Crotone is the far-east province of Calabria, faced on the Jonian Sea. Chief city Crotone boasts an ancient Magna-Graecia tradition and was a home country for philosophers, mathematicians, and distinguished personalities, first of all Pythagora. This city offers a noble, far tradition. This is where magna Graecia started and still lives, a reason of pride for all the inhabitants of Crotone. This mythical city was founded for a divine order. Capo Colonna still hosts a remain of such a past with the Hera Lacinia temple, one of the most important sacred places in antiquity as votive offers coming from several Mediterranean areas and fond in this zone still testify. These can be found in a rich archaeological museum. Not to be missed the Cathedral especially noteworthy for an icon of the Black Madonna and the decorated chapel dating back to the 19th Century. Close to the Cathedral there’s the stunning 16th Century Castle: a polygonal shaped fortress dominating the city. The province of Crotone is also known as Calabria’s granary and as the land of Gods’ nectar. Here, the renowned Cirò wine has been produced for centuries. Stretching from Punta Alice to Le Castella (the main historical local attraction is the wonderful and enchanting Aragonese Castle), its coast is full of naturalistic oasis from the Neto river outfall to the Sea Nature Reserve of Isola Capo Rizzuto. The inland territory hosts several historical and cultural places. Cerenzia – former Acerenza – Santa Severina, an enchanting village with its stately castle and artistic value of its ancient diocese; Petilia Policastro, where the Santa Spina Sanctuary lies; Cirò Marina, ancient Krimisa, and its Saracenic Markets; Strongoli, ancient Petelia, belvedere Spinello with its saltmines; Cotronei with its hydroelectric stations; Carfizzi, where Arbaeresh writer Carmine Abate was born.
The Sila National Park is about 70 km far from the coastline. Most important town is San Giovanni in Fiore, where you can visit the Abbey of Joachim of Flores and the Museum. Not to be missed is villaggio Palumbo, in the heart of the National Park, with the Ampollino Lake and Forest Reserve (Villaggio Monaco) where visitors get a chance to see the deer and the eagle owl.
